The resource is a website, which has a wide range of activities related to the human body. In regards multimodal activities, the website has a list of different organs and parts of the body which can be clicked on. From there, you can then watch a mini-movie about the particular body system which that organ belongs to, where it incorporates visual, audio and written literacy.
Relevance to the outcome
This resource is highly relevant to the Stage 2 Science Living Things outcome because it provides video clips about the different functions of the body systems, which relates directly to the chosen Science outcome as it enables students to see the different organs which make up the variety of body systems.
Aspect of Literacy suitable to be explored
This website was specifically chosen because it provides students with easily understandable diagrams and video clips which explain how each body system works in a suitable way for stage 2 students. An aspect of literacy which would be suitable to be explored using this resource would be to look at visual literacy, and analyse the use of diagrams.
In the video clips, many structured analytical images are utilised, such as a labeled diagram of the digestive system. These are a very effective way to present the different body systems, because in order to teach the students about the different organs which make up the systems, it is important that the diagrams show the parts of the whole system and are labeled (Unsworth, 2001, p. 85).
In terms of interactive meanings, since the movies on this website do not contain actual human faces, the images are offers (Unsworth, 2001, p. 95). Also, the images mostly consist of medium and close-up shots, in order to depict what the organs look like as part of each system, as well as individually. This will allow students to understand where the organs are located in relation to their own body.
